La Samaritaine, founded in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq, is the largest Parisian store. Its buildings, gradually built up in an Art Nouveau and Art Deco style, are the work of architects Frantz Jourdain and Henri Sauvage. The main store is listed as a historical monument. Over time, many historical departments disappeared (DIY, pet shop or even birding), keeping the alignment of La Samaritaine with other Parisian department stores, now focusing on fashion and furniture.
