What bees mean for our world does not need any further explanation. This issue is not only relevant in terms of our environment. This theme is also a design task.
From the bee house to the beehive, there are very different forms of beekeeping. By nature, European bee breeds need a winter- and weather-proof dwelling to survive. Originally, the bees lived wild in naturally occurring tree cavities in the forest. In the early days, humans began to offer bees hollowed-out tree trunks or other cavities as nesting places. Everywhere, special types and forms of bee dwellings made of different materials developed.
The bee house is a structure with several hives. Alternatively, bees are kept outdoors in so-called bee hives. The material wood is particularly bee-friendly and is therefore exceptionally well suited for the construction of the loot.
The historical beehives in southern Germany were mostly painted and sometimes heavily ornamented. On the one hand, the color provides an orientation aid for the bees. In addition, it guarantees solid wood protection. Last but not least, the color also represents the pride of the farmers of that time, which was expressed in special details on the house (front doors, balconies, etc.), in special pigeon houses in the middle of the courtyards or in the design of the beehives.
As part of a seminar in the summer semester 2020 at the field of tectonics in timber construction, 18 designs of such bee hives were created. 5 of these were built by the students. The joint workshop took place in the Upper Palatinate Open-air Museum Neusath-Perschen. The project was supported by the museum and kindly supported by the company Caparol.
